Conference Sessions

The Legal Side of Leading: FMLA, ADA, and Workplace Conduct

Managing people in the nonprofit world often means wearing many hats—and navigating complex employment laws without a full HR team. This session breaks down key workplace topics that every nonprofit manager should understand, including the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), explained in practical, easy-to-follow terms. We’ll discuss how to handle employee leave and accommodation requests, what “free speech” really means in the workplace, and how social media activity can affect your organization’s reputation. Using real-world examples, we’ll focus on helping you recognize potential issues early, respond appropriately, and protect both your team and your mission. You’ll leave with straightforward tips and tools to create a fair, legally sound, and positive work environment.
