Therapists (OT, PT, ST) and ECDSs may use some of the same assessment tools, but administration must be within each professional’s scope of practice.
Regarding the DAYC-2 (Developmental Assessment of Young Children):
– The DAYC-2 can be administered by qualified professionals including developmental specialists and early childhood educators within its defined scope.
– OTs, PTs, and SLPs may also administer the DAYC-2 within their practice scope for relevant domains.
– There is no general prohibition against both ECDSs and therapists using the DAYC-2 — the question is whether each professional is assessing domains within their scope.
– If an OT is using the DAYC-2 for motor domain evaluation and an ECDS is using it for cognitive/communication domains, this can be an appropriate division.
Best practice guidance from providers:
– Clarify internally which professional will administer which domains of shared assessment tools to avoid redundant or conflicting results.
– Consult each discipline’s state licensing board guidance if uncertain about scope of practice for a specific tool.
– When in doubt, a brief consultation with your state licensing board or a peer at another EIDT can clarify without requiring a formal opinion.
